(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — With the future of an Elgin pool in doubt, residents are making their case to city leaders to reopen it next year and keep it open.

The Lords Park pool, formally known as the Lords Park Family Aquatic Center, first closed in 2020 over COVID-19 concerns. But it has stayed closed since, with Elgin city officials calling the decision a cost-saving measure.

At a council meeting this week, numerous residents spoke in favor of reopening the pool in 2023, particularly for youngsters.

“Youth need activities,” one resident said. “If they don’t have activities, there’s a greater chance that they’re going to wind up talking to the police at some point.”

City officials have said no formal discussions have taken place about whether to close the pool next year or permanently.
