EVANSTON, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Forgetting your reusable shopping bags could get pricey in Evanston, where the City Council approved a new bag tax this week.

The ten cents per bag fee is lower than a proposal in December and doesn't apply to restaurants, small businesses and those that accept SNAP benefits.

The Evanston Review reports the ordinance that takes effect August first will also require paper bags offered to be made of at least 40 percent recycled materials. Businesses that violate the ordinance face a $100 fine per day.

Shoppers can still bag apples and lemons, however. Produce bags as well as those for newspapers and prescription drugs are exempt.
