Indiana taxpayers begin to receive extra cash due to budget surplus

INDIANA (WBBM NEWSRADI0) -- Indiana’s unexpected windfall in tax collections last year is starting to make its way back to taxpayers.

Individual filers are getting $125 dollars. Married couples filing jointly are receiving $250.

These refunds are separate from tax refunds.

4.3 million people are eligible, because of a state law that sends money back to taxpayers when there’s a budget surplus.

In this case, a total of $545 million dollars that will be distributed. This has not occurred for ten years. Some will get direct deposits and others will see checks in the mail.

It will take some time. When the refunds were announced in December, Governor Eric Holcomb said, “Despite a pandemic, Indiana exceeded all expectations and closed the state fiscal year with an unprecedented amount in reserves.”
