(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The pushback continued Thursday for Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, whose administration cut access to healthcare for some undocumented immigrants, over budgetary concerns.
A coalition of grassroots organizations, health care providers and other advocates held a rally outside Alivio Medical Center in Pilsen.
Healthy Illinois Campaign Director Tovia Siegel said the governor’s move will take away healthcare, a basic human right, from thousands of undocumented people. The Pritzker Administration is requiring co-pays and will no longer allow people aged 42 to 64 to enroll for coverage.
The coalition joins a number of lawmakers and others who are urging Pritzker to reverse the decision and find a solution.
The Healthy Illinois Campaign planned a protest for Friday in Daley Plaza.
There are more than 500,000 undocumented immigrants in Illinois. More than half are without health insurance and do not qualify for Medicaid or Affordable Care Act subsidies, advocates say.
