(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois State Representative Kam Buckner says he's "devastated" over the death of his cousin, an Eastern Illinois University Student.

Charleston Police say 22-year-old Yahacov Dennis disarmed an officer and shot himself over the weekend.

Police say officers were conducting a well-being check on a man who called 911 asking for help.
They say there was “a rapidly evolving event.”

They say Dennis, from County Club Hills, took an officer’s gun, turned it on himself and fired.

His family members question the police account. His sister says he was more than fine and the family deserves the truth.

A statement from Kam Buckner says, “He can’t tell his story, so we will. We owe him complete answers, absolute justice.”

He wrote, “You send your kids to school dreaming of their future, imagining them coming back in a cap & gown – not in a body bag.”
