CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Federal prosecutors have just filed criminal charges against another sitting Chicago alderman, and this one is a member of the city's best-known political family.

A new indictment accuses 11th Ward Ald. Patrick Daley Thompson, 51, of tax fraud and lying to federal authorities.

Thompson is a grandson and nephew of two legendary city mayors. He is the first member of the Daley family to face indictment while holding elected office.

The indictment focuses on loans Thompson received from Bridgeport-based Washington Federal Bank for Savings before it failed in 2017.

In a statement, Daley said he did nothing illegal but suggested he may have made "inadvertent" errors in his tax preparations. He joined the Chicago City Council in 2015.

Another Chicago alderman, Ed Burke of the 14th Ward, faces racketeering charges in a separate case.

Federal prosecutors on Thursday charged a former Chicago alderman, Ricardo Munoz, with fraud for allegedly misusing political funds.
