(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago Fire soccer club will break ground in the spring on a new training facility on the city's West Side.
Team and city officials have agreed on a lease deal for the 23-acre site near Ashland and Roosevelt, a plot of land that is currently vacant. It once was part of the Chicago Housing Authority’s Abla Homes.
The Fire intend to build a 53,000-square-foot center with soccer fields on the site and move their main soccer operations and youth academy from Bridgeview.
In exchange, the Fire have promised $8 million to help rehab other CHA housing resources for minority-owned businesses in the area and free youth sports programs.
