(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- When we live on the moon, it could be in a structure made in Rockford. And that's cool.
The Rosenberg moon habitat from Ingersoll Machine Products has won the 2023 Makers' Madness contest, sponsored by the Illinois Manufacturers' Association. As the winner, it is considered “The Coolest Thing Made in Illinois.”
Made in collaboration with Institut auf dem Rosenberg of Switzerland, the moon habitat is a 3D-printed polymer structure that can house a crew of two people. It is 23 feet tall, but is only 5 millimeters thick.
Jeff Ahrstrom, CEO of Ingersoll -- a sixth-generation company -- said humans would be back on the moon by 2025.
“Coolest thing” finalists included a drug incinerator made in Carmi and barbecue sauce from Murphysboro.
