CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Tensions continue to mount between Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and the Chicago police union. The Fraternal Order of Police plans to take its take its battle over a vaccine reporting mandate to the next level.

Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara is calling on all police officers who have not and do not want to report to the city whether they’ve been vaccinated against COVID to show up Tuesday morning at police headquarters as a show of unity. He wants them to present themselves to the Human Resources office in an apparent dare to put a large group of defiant officers on no-pay status for not reporting whether they’ve been vaccinated. So far, only 23 officers have been sent home without pay.

"10 a.m., 35th and Michigan, Human Resources, Second floor. We are asking all officers, who intend on standing with their brothers and sisters and defying this mandate and not complying with the portal, to show up, so the city can see just how many people and the press and the people across this city can see how many officers are standing united that their contractual rights are being violated and enough is enough," Catanzara said.

"We said from the get-go that we were willing to negotiate. This city has shut it down every step of the way. It’s been, ‘Sign the papers or get out of my face.’ Well...we will be in your face and we’re coming with a big number just to show you how bad it can really be."

A judge has allowed Catanzara to, once again, speak his mind publicly on the city’s mandate.

Meanwhile, the city said 70 percent of Chicago Police Department employees have reported their vaccination status.
