CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Hundreds of people gathered at the lakefront near Montrose Harbor this morning, as they have every Friday for the past two years during swimming season for the Friday Morning Swim Club.

They gather at 7:00 a.m. each Friday on the concrete opposite the harbor and even on cold days when the lake is rough.

Organizer Andrew Glatt starts the swim with announcements. Then people line the wall and jump in the lake. The water is still very cold.

Second timer America Guzman said the event is a good way for people to get together and form friendships. "It's community is really what it is," she said. "It's happiness and love honestly."

This started with a simple invitation and a few people. The organizer said they’ve seen 1,800 show up.

A man from Holland, who is in Chicago on business was also there. "It's really cool and the water is cool," he said with a laugh.
