GARY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Gary police have provided an update on the circumstances of a shooting Monday afternoon that wounded a detective.
Gary Police had said they were searching for a second suspect in the shooting that wounded detective Sgt. William Fazikas. They now say that is not the case.
They also provided some new information, saying in a statement, that Fazikas witnessed someone driving recklessly and went to pull him over.
As he got out of his car he was “ambushed by a barrage of gunfire.” He ran back to his car and took cover and was wounded in the shoulder.
The statement said he was bleeding out as other officers came to his aid.
The suspect had run away and was located in an abandoned home with the help of a police K9.
“I think it’s important to note that these men and women place themselves and their lives in danger every single day,” Gary Mayor Jerome Prince said.
Fazikas, who is a 32-year police veteran, was stable following the shooting. He was transferred from a local hospital to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was with family.
