Valuable coins dropped in Salvation Army Red Kettles in final days of campaign

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Valuable donations continue to pour in for the Salvation Army.

Seven more gold and silver coins have been dropped into Salvation Army Red Kettles in the Chicagoland area in the final days of the Red Kettle Campaign.

The Salvation Army said a 1980 Moscow Olympic 100 Rouble gold coin, accompanied by a note, was dropped into a kettle outside Jewel-Osco, located at 6245 Main Street, in Downers Grove on Saturday, Dec. 19. The donation, worth an estimated $1,300, will benefit programs and services at The Salvation Army Templo Laramie Corps.

Also on Saturday, a 1980 Moscow Olympic 100 Rouble gold coin was donated to a kettle outside Mariano’s, located at 1350 E. Route 22, in Lake Zurich. The coin, worth an estimated $1,300, will help fund programs at The Salvation Army Des Plaines Corps.

In Rockford, a 1000 Shilling Austrian gold coin was dropped in a kettle outside Schnucks, located at 6410 E. State St., on Tuesday, Dec. 22. The coin, worth about $750, will help fund services at The Salvation Army Rockford Temple Corps, which is part of the Salvation Army Metropolitan Division.

And in Darien, a 1/10 oz $5 Gold American Eagle coin was dropped into a kettle outside Jewel-Osco, located at 7335 S. Cass Ave., on Saturday, Dec. 19. The donation, worth approximately $225, will go to The Salvation Army Templo Laramie Corps, whose bell ringers were stationed at the store at the time.

Additionally on Saturday in Evergreen Park, a 1-oz silver South African Krugerrand coin was dropped in a kettle outside Mariano’s, located at 2559 W. 95th St. The donation, worth about $30, will go to The Salvation Army Red Shield Center.

And in Countryside, a 1-ounce American Silver Eagle coin was dropped in a kettle outside Jewel-Osco, located at 5545 Brainard Rd., on Saturday, Dec. 19. The donation, worth about $30, will go to the Templo Laramie Corps.

Then on Tuesday, a 1-ounce American Silver Eagle coin was dropped in a kettle outside Cabela’s, located at 5225 Prairie Stone Parkway. The donation, worth about $30, will go to The Salvation Army Elgin Corps.

The donations will make an impact in a time of unprecedented need. The Salvation Army launched the Rescue Christmas campaign nearly two months early in 2020 to meet a significant increase in the number of requests for food and emergency financial assistance. Some Salvation Army locations in Chicagoland have seen as much as a fivefold increase in need since the start of the pandemic.

While the Red Kettles will only be out through Christmas Eve, people can donate to the Rescue Christmas campaign online through Jan. 31 at www.salarmychristmas.org.
