CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Ground was broken today on the Chicago Fire soccer team’s new training facility on the Near West Side.

“Today is a historic day for our soccer club, the Chicago Fire,  and a great day for the city of Chicago,” said Chicago Fire owner and Chairman Joe Mansueto.

He joined Mayor Lightfoot for the groundbreaking of the $90 million facility that has a long-term lease on land where there was once public housing.

“This site will feature (a)  53,000 square foot,  two-story performance center. The Fire will finance the development and provide an $8 million community investment, to be used for the rehabilitation and preservation of nearby CHA housing,” Lightfoot said.

The facility includes multiple fields or pitches. The Fire is providing jobs and internships to public housing residents.

“This is a rare opportunity for CHA , to reactivate the former ABLA land that has sat vacant for nearly 20 years,” CHA CEO Tracey Scott said.
