(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A group of stray puppies is getting lots of attention on social media, after they were found in a box in unincorporated West Dundee last week.
Kane County Animal Control Administrator Brett Youngsteadt said he received a call Jan. 11 about five young stray pug mixes found in a cardboard box.
The person who found the animals reportedly saw a larger dog, but it ran off when he approached.
"We assume it to be the mother,” Youngsteadt said.
The rescue sounds like a miracle, but the situation isn't uncommon, he said.
"Unfortunately, animals are being dumped instead of surrendered,” he said.
“We would encourage anyone to work with animal control, your local animal organization or tying to re-home yourself is best. Shelters are full right now.
Everyone is doing the best they can to accommodate these animals, but unfortunately it's a sign of the times."
Youngsteadt says the pups are doing well and that Animal Control is now trying to locate the dogs' mother and their owner.
