(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Village Board in Gurnee has approved a first-ever liquor license for a gas station.
Two trustees, Greg Garner and Cheryl Ross, voted no to liquor sales at a BP station on Hunt Club Road. Garner said it was going to change Gurnee.
"I'm uncomfortable with this because we're opening the door, and we're going to create a different identity for Gurnee," Garner said. "We have the community that we have because of what we've been doing, so I'm real careful about where we may be going. We can say it's just beer and wine, but it's beer and wine sold in gas stations, which we've never had before."
Mayor Tom Hood said he was going to "agree to disagree."
"Throughout the community, alcohol has been made readily available, and I have a difficult time trying to distinguish between a facility like this and Cardinal Liquors, or other places that are able to sell alcohol in town," said Hood.
During public comment, two residents opposed the liquor license, which only allows sales of beer and wine.
This approval came four months after the trustees opened the door on a three-to-three vote with the mayor breaking the tie.
