HAMMOND, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- There’s going to be a vigil Thursday evening in Hammond for a 13-year old boy who was shot and killed Sunday night while trick-or-treating.
23-year- old Desmond Crews of Gary was charged Wednesday with shooting to death Thomas DeLaCruz on Halloween night on 167th Street in Hammond.
DeLaCruz was trick-or-treating with his aunt and other children and had some words with a man wearing shorts. The man allegedly threatened the kids, according to the Northwest Indiana Times.
Not too long after, a car pulled up to the group and some men got out including the man wearing shorts. Court records indicate that Crews told police he was handed a gun by one of the people he was with and others began shooting at the children.
DeLaCruz was killed and another 13-year old was wounded.
"He was being a kid out with his aunt trick-or-treating, walking with a group of kids," Jasmine Anderson, mother of DeLaCruz told the Times. "And some ignorant, sick person decided to shoot at kids."
The vigil is planned at 5 p.m. at the site of the shooting.
