(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — New numbers from the city of Chicago show that there has been an increase in hate crimes reported against the Jewish community in 2024.
The Chicago Commission on Human Relations (CCHR) publishes its report on hate crimes in the city on an annual basis. In 2023, the CCHR said there were 303 hate crimes reported in the city. This year, through June 13, there have been 124.
Through the first five-and-a-half months of 2024, there have been 50 hate crimes against the Jewish community — the same amount reported over the entirety of 2023.
The commission said global crises cause increases in hate crimes, as do political partisanship and rhetoric, white nationalist propaganda and online conspiracy theories. Chicago has seen fewer reports of hate crimes against Black people, Latinos and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
CCHR officials expect the true number of hate crimes to be higher than what has been reported, as they said “only a fraction of hate crimes get reported.”
The full CCHR report can be found online.
