CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Computer problems have led to another delay with Cook County property tax bills, but officials said homeowners who want to know what they owe now can see their tax bill online.
Second installment tax bills for 2022 were supposed to go out in July, but the Cook County Treasurer's office will mail them in two weeks.
The county sends two tax bill installments each year. The first is normally due in March, and the second is normally due in August. Ongoing technical problems between the Cook County Assessor's Office and the Board of Review, though, have caused delays over the past two years. Officials said the bills should arrive sooner than they did in 2022.
Tax payments will be due Dec. 1, 2023, which gives homeowners an extra four months.
Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas encouraged homeowners to pay online — either for free by using a bank account or by paying a 2.1% processing fee with a credit card.
If homeowners aren't able to pay the full amount, Pappas said paying part of it will lower the interest that accrues. Tax bills can be found and paid on Cook County's property tax website.
