CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — As the Chicago Teachers Union and Chicago Public Schools leaders argue over COVID-19 safety steps to return to class, there’s a huge disparity in student vaccination rates across the district.
Only 10% of students at Manley Career Academy on the West Side are fully vaccinated while the city’s largest school, Lane Tech on the North Side, has 83% fully vaccinated.
That’s according to Chalkbeat Chicago, which looked at vaccination and testing rates and found more than 200 schools had less than 10% students opt-in for COVID-19 testing.
Its analysis showed high schools that are majority Black have an average vaccination rate of 28% and majority Latino high schools averaged 57%.
The teachers union had demanded negative PCR tests for all students before resuming in-person but has backed off, instead pushing for all staffers to get tested plus weekly random tests of 10% of students and staff.
As of press time, the school district and teachers haven’t reached an agreement and it looks as if classes will be canceled for students for a fourth straight day.
