CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - With Ukrainian flags and anti-war signs in their hands, Chicagoans linked arms to form a human chain along the Chicago Riverwalk Sunday afternoon in support of Ukraine.
Dan Daizen, president of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America Illinois, was just one of around a hundred people- men, women, children of all nationalities- linking arms along the river walk underneath the DuSable Bridge. Sunday’s gesture was intended to mimic a memorable event that occurred over 30 years ago in Ukraine. He said the human chain formed in 1990 by 300,000 Ukrainians from the capital of Keev to Lviv when the country was still under Soviet rule was provocative.
“We’re not looking for provocative actions today. We’re just showing our unity with the Ukrainian people, the Ukrainian nation in this time of just horrendous catastrophe that’s developing,” said Daizen.
Daizen believes that these types of events do help in raising the spirits and fundraising efforts in and around Ukraine.
Immigrant Mariana Sohan also participated. She has been living in the U.S. for six years and said the outpouring of support makes her feel that she is not alone.
“The world doesn’t agree with the evil things happening in Ukraine. It gives the hope that it will end soon,” said Sohan.
