CHICAGO (WBBM Newsradio) – Drivers in Hyde Park will encounter road closures and parking restrictions beginning Monday as the city prepares for the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center later this month.
The first round of traffic impacts started at 6 a.m. Monday and includes closures and parking restrictions along portions of 60th Street, Blackstone Avenue, Midway Plaisance and Stony Island Avenue. Some restrictions will remain in place through June 19, while others are scheduled to continue through June 22.
Among the most significant closures, 60th Street between Dorchester and Blackstone avenues will be closed through the morning of June 19. A portion of 60th Street between Blackstone Avenue and the eastbound lanes of Stony Island Avenue will remain closed for two weeks.
Additional traffic restrictions are scheduled to begin June 15, affecting portions of Midway Plaisance, Cornell Drive, Blackstone Avenue, Stony Island Avenue and several surrounding streets near the presidential center.
Some residential streets west of the center will have restricted access, limited to local residents.
The Obama Presidential Center is scheduled to hold grand opening events June 19-21. City officials are urging motorists to plan ahead, expect delays and use alternate routes when possible.
