(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A warning is going out to people looking for government assisted housing.

The alert is from the Illinois Housing Development Authority.

It says a new online scam appearing on Facebook as a flier is mimicking the Housing Authority and targets those wanting to get on the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program waitlist, taking their personal information and stealing their identity.

Scammers are asking people to provide their information through a fraudulent link or by visiting the IHDA office.

The IHDA is asking those who are seeking public housing to report any suspicious websites or social media posts to police. It is reminding people that housing authorities do not charge fees to join a waiting list.

The IHDA is also reminding people that if they are seeking housing information on social media to make sure the account they are interacting with is the correct one. THe IHDA Facebook has been verified and has a blue checkmark next to its name.

Anyone who has paid a fraudulent site should file a report with the police and Illinois Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division and the Federal Trade Commission.
