(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The State of Illinois is one step closer to virtual drivers licenses, if you have a certain type of smartphone.
Illinois is in the process of allowing you to store your drivers license or state ID card in the Apple Wallet app on your smartphone.
Secretary Alexi Giannoulias says bringing mobile driver’s licenses and state IDs to Illinois will ensure even more privacy and security for residents.
Once launched, Users will have the ability to add their driver’s license or state ID to Wallet and simply tap their iPhone or Apple Watch to present it in person, without taking out their card or handing over their device.
The virtual licenses and State ID cards will not replace physical cards but serve as a supplement. They are not mandatory.
The State is also working to bring virtual licenses to other digital wallets such as Google Wallet.
