CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton is among those reacting to last week's attack on the Capitol building in Washington. She is joining Governor Pritzker in calling for the removal of President Donald Trump from the White House.
After Wednesday's events in Washington, D.C., the calls for President Trump's removal from office have come from all levels of elected leadership in the country, and from both Republicans and Democrats. Some implicated President Trump is an instigator and have called on the President to resign, while some have called on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment.
Governor Pritzker quickly called for the President to be impeached.
Illinois' Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton agreed with Pritzker and told WBBM Newsradio on Sunday night that she supports holding President Trump accountable for Wednesday's events.
"He should be held accountable for instigating, for encouraging, and quite frankly for cheering on a riotous mob. Right now there are five people who are dead, there are several others who are hurt. I can say this is one of the darkest and most frightening days in U.S. history. We simply cannot allow him (Trump) to hijack democracy," she said.
Stratton said the violence was shocking, but something the President has been stoking.
"From the beginning of his presidency, and even before his presidency, his rhetoric was of the sort that certainly inflamed, it caused division, has been inflammatory and it is dangerous," Stratton said. "Anytime you promote violence or anarchy, or any way to divide our country, again that is an impeachable offense."
Her office released a statement that read: “President Trump should be impeached for instigating a riotous attempt to highjack democracy at the U.S. Capitol that resulted in death and chaos on a day that will go down as one of the darkest in U.S. history. There is no room for leadership that inspires violence or divides this great country.”
