(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office is again extending the expiration dates of driver’s licenses and state identification cards as the agency catches up with a backlog of work.

Secretary of State Jesse White said the latest and final extension for licenses or IDs that have expired will run until March 31, 2022. It does not apply to commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) or CDL learning permits.

It’s the latest effort by White’s office to try to accommodate demand in vehicle services during the pandemic. Some services, such as renewing license plates, can be done online. For people who must come into a license bureau, appointments are required at many locations (seniors, expectant mothers, people with disabilities and veterans are offered walk-up priority).

“During the pandemic, my office has continued to serve the public, including face-to-face transactions, in a safe and responsible manner,” White said in a news release Friday. “This extension is necessary as my office continues to address the heavy customer volume caused by the COVID-19 pandemic through expanded online services and the introduction of appointments at select Driver Services facilities.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the federal REAL ID deadline to May 3, 2023.
