CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago Plan Commission heard a presentation about the long-sought extension of the CTA Red Line on the South Side.
The project, while not yet fully funded, remains years away, but the presentation to the Plan Commission is one necessary step toward that end to apply for federal funding.
The plan includes more than five miles of track and four stations between 95th Street and 130th Street.
"That's a long way away for people who would like to see those other places created as soon as possible," said Ammar Elmajdoub, a Strategic Planner with the CTA.
Once funded, its expected that construction would last from 2025 to 2029.
Far South Side residents have long complained about the “inequity” of not having trains, as though the city ends at 95th Street.
"It's so telling that this much of the city had just not had a transit line available to them for this long," said Commissioner Mariana Novara.
