(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A Lake County Jail inmate faces additional charges and a higher bond after he allegedly tried to disarm a corrections officer early this month before attempting to run away.

Authorities say 21-year-old Jim Ayala of Waukegan was set to be transported from a holding cell to court on March 1. When a corrections officer opened the cell door, Ayala alleged tried to take the Taser on the officer’s belt.

Instead, Ayala was only able to grab a spare cartridge from the device and threw it at the officer’s head, the sheriff’s office said. He ran from the officer but was tackled by another guard.

During a struggle, the second officer injured his knee, officials said. Ayala was placed in handcuffs and returned to the holding cell.

Ayala originally faced charges of domestic battery and resisting a peace officer, stemming from a Feb. 15 arrest. Now, he is charged with additional offenses that include aggravated assault and attempting to disarm a corrections officer, the sheriff’s department said.

His bond has been increased from $50,000 to $250,000.
