(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The upcoming Chicago Day of the Girl is designed to help young women appreciate their own gifts and stories.
Back in 2012, the United Nations declared Oct. 11 as the International Day of the Girl. Here in Chicago, organizations like Girls Like Me, Inc. is planning a day of activities, education and fun at the South Shore Cultural Center.
Heidi Pearson, the group’s director of strategic communications and partnerships, said girls can be overlooked, from cultural and societal standpoints.
“Girls are often required to be quiet, and their words are often dimmed down because society says that males – masculinity – is more important,” she said.
Graphic designer Toussaint Werner has two daughters who have been in the programs. He said he doubts boys are treated any better.
“For me, at least, the real conversation is not just a gender conversation, but it’s also a racial conversation,” he said.
Girls and the challenges they face is the focus of “At Issue,” which airs this weekend at 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m.
