It's a start, LGBTQ ministry says of pope's new policy on same-sex blessings

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A local LGBTQ ministry group is reacting to a policy from Pope Francis that allows Catholic Priests to bless same-sex couples.

Mary Donnelly, president of Dignity/Chicago, which has been ministering to LGBTQ Catholics since 1972, said it’s a start.

But Donnelly adds: “It is not a full acknowledgment.”

Still, she said there is one constant in the history of social justice movements: Progress is incremental.

“It doesn’t happen overnight, and it doesn’t happen in one giant leap,” Donnelly said. “It happens in one incremental step after another.”

Her organization is still reading the Vatican policy. The immediate impact will be on Catholics who experience tension between their love for their LGBTQ children or relatives and church doctrine.
