(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Jewel-Osco has re-opened its store at 94th and Ashland that was all but gutted by looters in May 2020.

Standing outside the newly renovated and expanded Jewel-Osco in Auburn-Gresham on Wednesday, Mayor Lightfoot recalled touring the devastation on the South side and the ransacked stores a year ago.

“Some of these stores, I thought, ‘There’s no chance that they’ll rebuild,’” the mayor said.

She said Jewel-Osco has been a “tremendous partner” with the city.

The company not only upgraded the grocery store, but added a 2,200-square-foot community center to be used by the famed South Shore Drill Team and its youth programs.

Ald. Howard Brookins Jr., who joined Lightfoot, grew up about a block away and expressed gratitude that Jewel-Osco is back.
