(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Springfield hospital has won a round in court as it tries to block legal attempts to force doctors to administer the controversial drug Ivermectin to a COVID-19 patient on a ventilator.
This week, a Sangamon County judge ruled in favor of Memorial Medical Center, amid a lawsuit filed by the wife of a 61-year-old patient who has been intubated.
An attorney for Anita Clouse argued Ivermectin may be the last hope for her husband, Randy, who was hospitalized earlier this summer. Hospital officials indicate Randy Clouse has actually showed recent signs of improvement, and the drug could cause complications that are fatal.
A Chicago physician who recommends the drug’s use on Clouse said there is anecdotal evidence it has helped some patients, according to the Springfield State Journal-Register, which covered this week’s hearing.
Federal health officials have stressed that there is no evidence supporting Ivermectin as an effective treatment for COVID-19 patients. The drug is used in humans and animals to eradicate parasites.
It wasn’t immediately clear whether Anita Clouse would purse an appeal, the Springfield paper reported.
