MAPLE PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A far west suburban school district has decided to try to avoid calling “snow days” during the new academic year.

The Kaneland District 302 school board has decided to opt for remote learning rather than calling a “snow day” if it can possibly help it this school year. 8 p.m. would be the magic cut-off, according to district official Patrick Raleigh.

“If we can listen to different meteorologists, different weather channels and decide and the evidence is showing that inclement weather is on the way, and we can make that call by 8 p.m. the night before, we have thought that that would be enough time for our teachers to get ready to teach via Zoom,” Raleigh.

That would be for 2nd through 12th graders. Kindergarten and 1st graders do not have school-issued devices and would be given “blizzard bags” of materials to be completed at home on remote learning days.
