PLAINFIELD, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Over 1,000 people made their way through downtown Plainfield Saturday for a Halloween celebration that has taken on a double purpose.
Families showed up to Plainfield's Business District along Lockport Street with children dressed in this year’s popular costumes such as Mario, Spiderman along with several wizards and ninjas.
Melanie brought her three daughters for the event. Her youngest was dressed as a mouse. She said she was looking forward to "take the kids out, do some fun trick-or-treating, just enjoy the weather and get some candy for them."
Local businesses opened their doors and filled bags with candy and other healthy alternatives for the children.
Another parent Sean told WBBM that attending the event also known as Halloween Spooktacular, does not mean his family will be skipping Halloween.
"I mean for us, we're definitely gonna go out during Halloween night. For those with younger children, this is a perfect alternative," he said. "This is just our warm up."
While trick-or-treaters enjoyed the engaging family event, the tragic murder of six -year-old Wadea Al-Fayoume just two weeks ago was not forgotten. Several businesses will donate a portion of the day's proceeds to the boy's family, who resides in Plainfield.
