(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Cook County commissioner is calling for a moratorium on enforcing the new state law banning assault-style weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines until legal challenges to the legislation are resolved in the courts.

Commissioner Sean Morrison (17th) opposes the ban, and he says he expects the U.S. Supreme Court will eventually decide whether the law is constitutional.

Morrison says if the law is struck down, Cook County could face very costly lawsuits from any people or businesses prosecuted under the legislation.

He said he sees no justifiable reason to enforce a law that could be ruled unconstitutional.

On the other hand, if the law survives court challenges, he's fine with it being enforced.

“At that point, I believe in the rule of law,” Morrison said.
