CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago Public Schools officials are reminding parents to vote in Local School Council elections.

Parents can cast a vote for candidates during report card pickup this week.

Local School Councils exist at each of the more than 600 public schools across the city and operate independently of the CPS administration, the school board and other schools.

LSC are made up of students, parents, teachers and community representatives.

They approve individual school budgets, select principals, renew their contracts, approve school academic plans, and carry out other responsibilities for individual schools.

Elections for elementary schools will be held Wednesday and polls for high school LSCs will open Thursday.

Voters can view which candidates are up for a seat at their school online.
