Chicago man charged in crash with IDOT truck that killed 4-year-old son on Bishop Ford Fwy

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A Chicago man responsible for a crash that killed his son on the Bishop Ford Freeway last March has been charged.

It was about 10 a.m. on March 31 when an SUV driven by 27-year-old William Collier slammed into the back of an Illinois Department of Transportation truck. The truck was stopped in the left traffic lane assisting someone whose car broke down.

Illinois State Police said he hit the back of the truck for unknown reasons. Collier’s 4-year-old son of the same name was killed. Collier, a passenger and the driver of the IDOT truck sustained nonlife-threatening injuries.

It’s unclear why the investigation took nearly 10 months but, state police said the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office has approved a charge of reckless homicide.

Collier was taken into custody on Thursday.
