ROUND LAKE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Round Lake man is expected to survive after he was shot by a SWAT team for allegedly taking a woman hostage.

Round Lake police were called to a residence on North Park Road and found a woman standing outside. She told officers there was a woman in the basement who needed help.

The officers entered the home and heard two people downstairs. As they tried to make contact, another officer looked into a basement window and saw a man holding a knife to a woman's neck and taking her hostage.

Chris Covelli, spokesperson for the Lake County major task force, said the man refused to work with police, so a regional task force was called.

"As NIPAS (Northern Illinois Police Alarm System) negotiators continued their attempts to deescalate and establish a relationship with the suspect, he continued with his persistent refusal to drop the knife and due to the substantial risk of death or serious harm that this victim faced, it forced the two police officers from NIPAS to fire at the man-striking him twice."

The 33-year-old man was taken to the hospital is expected to survive his gunshot wounds. He was the husband of the woman later identified as a 30-year- old.
