Medical Examiner identifies 5-year-old girl shot and killed on Near West Side Sunday

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago police are investigating after a young girl was shot and killed on the Near West Side early Sunday morning.

Police said the 5-year-old girl died after being shot in the abdomen while sitting inside a parked car near Lake and Campbell around 3:30 a.m.

She has since been identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner as Reig Ware of Chicago.

One neighbor told CBS-2 he heard several gunshots.

“I heard one shot then 30, 40 more shots...How are you going to go through life saying, ‘I killed a baby?”” he asked.

Police said a group of people was standing outside when shots were fired.

8th District CPD Commander Bryan Spreyne addressed the shooting at a Sunday roll call.

“When we have juveniles like that, it really hits home,” Spreyne said. “It’s difficult to handle. It’s difficult for our responding officers. That’s somebody’s child, brother, sister, cousin.”

Police said a 24-year-old man was also shot. He’s listed in good condition.

No arrests were made.
