(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago police are getting a helping hand from a northern neighbor for security during the Democratic National Convention.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker spoke about convention security this week and said the Secret Service, FBI, and Illinois State Police are among the agencies that will assist Chicago police this August.

“We’ve got Milwaukee police also joining us to make sure that we’re keeping peace in the city of Chicago and managing the protesters while also managing security around the United Center,” he said.

Milwaukee Police told WBBM they will provide 75 officers to Chicago for the Convention, and Chicago will send 75 officers to Milwaukee for the Republican Convention in July.

There are no plans to use the National Guard.

“We don’t call in the National Guard unless the city asks us to,” he said. “It’d be completely inappropriate to march into a city somehow and not coordinate with the police department in that city. If necessary, certainly, and we’ll have people on standby as we always do when there are mass events.”
