(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- On what one police official described as “intensely emotional,” mourners gathered in Oak Lawn Tuesday to pay their respects to a fallen Chicago police officer.

Shortly after visitation for Officer Areanah Preston began, a line nearly wrapped around the front of the Blake-Lamb Funeral Home.

Attendees were greeted by police on horseback and a massive American flag hanging from a Chicago Fire truck.

Juan Guyatano came all the way from Aurora.

“The first responders represent everything for the community,” he said. “Without them, we wouldn’t be here.”

He brought along a homemade, wooden plaque to give to the family of Preston. She was fatally shot early this month while returning to her Avalon Park home after work during a robbery attempt.

“I just want to let them know that there’s a whole community supporting them, including my family,” Guyatano said.

Four people have been charged in Preston’s shooting.
