(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Staff and residents of a senior housing facility in Glenview are nearly 100% vaccinated, an encouraging sign for occupants who have been isolated for the past year.

By Monday’s end, 94% of staff members at Belmont Village Senior Living were expected to be vaccinated against COVID-19, joining the 99% of seniors living there who have gotten their doses.

CEO Patricia Will, whose father is a resident, said the near-complete inoculations at Belmont Village allow for a more relaxed environment for activities among neighbors.

“Just the glory of a hug, of breaking bread together, is otherworldly,” Will said.

For the time being, visitors will need to be vaccinated or test negative for the coronavirus.

"I think that 2020 was the year of taking things away," Will said. "And 2021 -- largely thanks to the success and the remarkable science of the vaccine -- is a year where we can start putting things back."
