CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Mayor Lightfoot and city officials broke ground Tuesday on the latest affordable housing project planned for the South Side.
The over $40 million project, in conjunction with the city’s INVEST South/West initiative will bring a mixed-income, transit-oriented development near 63rd and Peoria.
The first phase of the project labeled “Thrive Englewood” will see the construction of 62 one-to-three bedroom apartments. Fifty-one of those units will be affordable for households earning up to 60% of the area’s median income, the city said.
The building will be six-stories and will include an on-site fitness room, community room, bike storage, and laundry facilities on every floor. The property will also have abundant retail space, including restaurants.
In the second phase, 44 more mixed-income apartments will be built along with additional retail shops and a 65-space parking lot.
"Projects like Thrive Englewood are a hallmark of my administration's INVEST South/West initiative and its mission to create economic opportunities in our neighborhoods,” said Lightfoot in a press release. “With this latest groundbreaking, we are delivering mixed-use, affordable housing and promoting a pedestrian-friendly corridor in Englewood that will serve residents for years to come.”
The project will complete Englewood Square Phase 1 of the INVEST South/West which began in 2016 with the construction of the Englewood Square shopping plaza.
