New marijuana cultivation facility breaks ground in Matteson

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Ground was broken Monday morning near Interstate 57 and Route 30 in south suburban Matteson for what’s described as one of the largest marijuana cultivation facilities in the state.

Matteson Village President Sheila Chalmers-Currin with Congresswoman Robin Kelly welcomed the 4Front Ventures.

“We talked about how communities could no longer depend on shopping malls, or on the Main Street model of small shops and businesses. Local leaders had to look at e-commerce and emerging industries,” Chalmers-Currin said.

Lincoln Mall, which was located in Matteson down the near the groundbreaking site, closed in 2015 after 41 years in operation.

JT Archer, vice president of development with 4Front Ventures, said this will be a 560,000-square foot indoor cultivation and production facility that will have a massive kitchen for extraction of THC used to produce marijuana edibles.

But the company won't say how much marijuana it will be capable of growing each year.

“The yields itself, something we don’t publicly talk about because that is one of our secret sauces in a highly competitive marketplace, but I can you that growth goes on in perpetuity in the cannabis world,” Archer said.

The facility is expected to be up and running by the end of next year.
