(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Photography students and their professor at Northern Illinois University say they have created the largest paper snowflake ever made.

Jessica Labatte, who runs the photography department at NIU’s art school, wanted to have a bonding experience with her students after they returned to campus from remote learning during the COVID pandemic.

She likes to make paper snowflakes, so she decided to create the largest one on record.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the previous record snowflake was about 20 feet across.

“We decided to try to at least double the current record, and so we did,” she said.

Theirs was 44 feet, 6.6 inches across.

Labatte says it took more than 10 hours to create the snowflake and lay it out on the floor of the NIU Convocation Center.

She says it will take about 12 weeks for Guinness to approve her application for the new record.
