CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An elementary school on the North Side is getting a new look with the help of local volunteers and lots of paint.
A.J. Crofford and a group of volunteers made the final touches on their paint work at the Ruben Salazar Bilingual Education Center.
It's part of "Paint a Better Chicago," which Crofford said is the volunteer service group of Chicago Paint and Coatings Association.
"We'll pick a school each summer and paint eight to twelve classrooms, hallways, area, to help beautify the school a little bit."
Around 35 volunteers helped paint several rooms and hallways in the school. This is the group's 27th year of painting.
Julianna Bryant is also one of them. She's been volunteering for seven years.
"I love the people here, and I love doing something for the Chicago community especially being able to give back to the community," she said. "It just makes you feel so good it makes you feel happy."
Co-chair of the event Kathryn Carroll said transforming a space with color can have a huge impact on students.
"Whenever you feel good in your space, you're more productive. You're happier, it can really have an impact on your mood and so just making it a cheery, happier, more positive environment for the students," she emphasized.
"I think color has a big impact on all of that."
