(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Next week, an alliance of nonprofit service organizations will mobilize to offer extra help to the Chicago Public Schools and their students.

The event at Malcolm X College on Oct. 5 is called a school resource fair.

Ylonda Ware, counselor and site coordinator for Henderson Elementary School, is looking forward to the event and the benefits it will bring.

“We can provide access to healthcare services, medical, dental, eyeglasses and vision,” she said. “They help us provide teen dating violence prevention services. It also helps connect us to academic resources.”

One of those is Math Motivators. Therese Marske is program coordinator.

“Some schools, they just are understaffed, and they can’t even have the time to bring our program into the school. So, realizing that, over the last year we’ve developed a virtual touring center.”

Sometimes the partners must get creative to help.

This weekend’s “At Issue” will focus on school resources. It airs 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
