(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The owner of Margie's Candies -- the Bucktown ice cream shop that's been in business for more than a century -- has died.
The funeral mass for Dr. George Poulos was held Monday morning.
A flower arrangement in the shape of an ice cream cone stands in front of the locked doors of Margie's Candies at Armitage and Western. The card attached says 'you will be missed' and is protected from the rain by the red and white striped awning countless customers have walked under as they made their way inside to eat clamshell bowls of ice cream topped with hot fudge.
Poulos took over the family business that was started in 1921 by his grandparents. Besides ice cream, Margie's Candies is known for its hand-dipped terrapins and other chocolates.
Poulos died at age 86 last week, surrounded by his family, his obituary says. He was recalled as a kind and intelligent man who loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and yachtsman.
