CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago high school is ranked fourth best public high school in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

Walter Payton College Preparatory High School ranks No. 1 among public high schools in Illinois, according to U.S. News and World Report, which reviewed 24,000 public high schools across the country.

Payton is ranked No. 3 nationally among all magnet schools and No. 4 among all public high schools in the country.

Named for the beloved Chicago Bears running running back, Payton is a selective enrollment school that opened in 2000 on the Near North Side.  It received the National Blue Ribbon Award in 2008 and 2014.

The top five public high schools in Illinois are all in Chicago.

It’s Payton at No. 1, followed by Northside College Prep, Jones College Prep High School, Whitney Young Magnet High School  and Lane Technical High School.
