Officials in the southwest suburbs are notifying residents there are problems with two storm warning sirens.
The Plainfield Police Department posted on Facebook that two of Plainfield’s outdoor warning sirens were badly damaged by recent storms and will be out-of-service for some time.
The sirens are located on Route 126 east of Drauden Road and on Lockport Street near I-55.
Because of that, Plainfield officials remind residents to make sure their cell phone emergency and weather alert notifications are always turned “on”.
They also say that outdoor warning sirens are primarily designed to alert people who are outside to get them to seek shelter, but that the sirens should not be the only source of severe weather info.
The village of Plainfield is going to begin replacing and expanding its outdoor warning siren system but that project is still in the planning phase. The village has received a $500,000 grant to begin the replacement and expansion of its siren warning system.
