A rookie police officer in the north suburbs had the perfect training to handle a unique first day on the job.
On Aug. 18, Grayslake Police received a call about a woman in labor.
Even though she was just a few hours into her first shift, Officer Kelsey Watson spoke up.
"I told him I'm certified to assist in emergency deliveries, if it's actually happening," she said.
Officer Watson was thrown a pair of gloves and sent into the home, where she found the woman on the bathroom floor in active labor.
"I put one hand under the baby's neck to help support the weight, and one hand on the back of the head to help guide the baby out," she explained. "I think within three minutes of being on scene, she delivered straight into my arms."
It made Officer Watson the first person to welcome a healthy Baby Ellowyn into the world.
"It turns out babies are very wet when they come out," Watson said before laughing.
She was able to reunite with the family again this month, when they brought 'Thank You' cookies to the police department.
"The family is amazing, all of them are very good," said Watson, who said she was excited she got another chance to hold Ellowyn.
"I was talking to the mother and I said I really appreciate that she's a lot more dry this time," laughed Watson.
